A USB flash drive may keep prompting you to format it whenever it is inserted into your computer. This isn’t ideal as it could indicate the drive has become corrupted and cannot be used anymore.

This error can occur for various reasons, such as malware infection or virus, sudden power outage, bad sectors and more. Fortunately, there are solutions to address the problem and restore normal operation.

1. Run chkdsk

If your flash drive keeps prompting you to format, it could be infected with a virus. Before trying to repair the drive, run a virus scan first as viruses can corrupt data on it.

One way to resolve this problem is running chkdsk, the Windows command-line utility for checking your computer’s hard drives and files. This tool can help determine what’s wrong with your machine and also repairs any errors that might be causing it.

However, running chkdsk can take a considerable amount of time to complete. Depending on the size of your hard drive, its contents, and any errors it detects, this process could take anywhere from minutes to hours to complete.

To begin, open the command prompt by either typing it in using your keyboard or clicking on Start > Type cmd > Close Window

Start the scan now to search for bad sectors on your drive and file errors that could be causing the issue. Afterward, it will provide a report detailing what was discovered.

You have the option to either run a full scan or repair your drive. If you opt for repair, the drive will go through multiple stages to correct any errors and rewrite any bad sectors.

If you choose to run a full scan, the system will search all available space on your drive and check for errors in the file system. It can then repair any logical disk errors it discovers and restore the integrity of all of your files.

The system will save the results of its scan as files in your computer’s root directory. You can access these files and determine if any errors have been corrected; if so, data recovery software may be able to recover them.

2. Restart your computer

If your computer keeps prompting you to format a flash drive, it could be an indication that the device is corrupted. Before proceeding with formatting, be sure to backup any important data so as not to lose anything important.

One potential solution to this issue is restarting your computer. Doing so may prompt it to reinstall its hardware, which might enable it to recognize the device more accurately.

However, if that doesn’t resolve the problem, running chkdsk on your device to check for bad sectors may help resolve it.

To do this, open a command prompt as an administrator and type “chkdsk n:/f” (replace n with the true drive letter of the problematic partition), then hit Enter.

This will launch a disk scan that will inspect and repair any damaged sectors on your USB drive. Please be patient as this process can take some time, so don’t expect to save any data before it is complete.

Once the scanning is complete, you should be able to safely reformat your flash drive. Be sure to do this prior to transferring any data from the device to a new one, however.

Your computer may require formatting due to a virus infection or physical damage. If this is the case, take a backup of all your data using a data recovery tool first.

You may try connecting the flash drive to another computer or using a different USB port on your laptop or PC. If this doesn’t solve the issue, more serious measures need to be taken.

Finally, if none of those solutions solve your problem, running a virus scan on the device to see if there’s a malicious program causing it. This not only removes any viruses from the device but also detects other possible issues that might prompt your computer to ask you to format the device.

3. Try a different USB port

If your USB drive keeps asking you to format, this could be a sign that it has become damaged. Be sure to address the issue quickly since delay could leave you without your files and information for an extended period of time.

Most often, this problem is caused by a bad sector on your drive or in your computer’s file system. Fortunately, there are several methods to resolve the problem without sacrificing any of your data.

First and foremost, try plugging the USB device into a different port. You may be amazed at how much this will help get it working again.

Additionally, try using it on another computer to determine whether the issue lies with either the device or your operating system. If neither of these steps resolves your issue, then you’ll need to employ a third-party program for scanning for viruses or other issues on the drive.

This will guarantee the problem isn’t caused by a virus or other malicious software. Additionally, it should allow you to determine if the issue is with your USB drive or another device so that further action can be taken.

One way to check for bad sectors on your drive is using DiskGenius free edition. It will check for them and attempt to repair any errors causing the problem.

If you are uneasy using this command line tool, there are other free alternatives that will do a similar job. However, be aware that these programs tend to be more technical in nature and require knowledge of how the command line functions.

If your USB drive won’t boot up after repairs, buying a new one might be your best bet. While this will cost more than simply fixing the existing drive, in the long run it’s cheaper – especially if there’s valuable data stored on it.

4. Run a virus scan

USB drives may require formatting due to various reasons, including logical damage, virus infection and physical damages.

Your computer probably already has a built-in virus scanner, which you can run to scan the drive for viruses. It may even be able to remove any that have already infected it; however, for optimal protection it’s best to utilize third-party antivirus software for this task.

A virus or malware attack can force your USB flash drive to repeatedly ask to be formatted, wiping out all data contained therein. For this reason, it’s important to back up important files regularly.

You can also run a virus scan on your flash drive to resolve this issue. Not only will this help remove any infections from the drive, but it will also enable you to recover any files that were lost during the process.

Depending on the severity of the problem, you may be able to repair the file system on your flash drive using CMD commands. To do this, plug the drive into your computer and open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

Once in Command Prompt window, type in “chkdsk g: /f /r /x” and hit Enter. This will automatically repair any file system errors on your device as well as eliminate Windows errors that are stopping it from formatting your drive.

If your USB drive keeps prompting for formatting, it is best to take action as soon as possible. Alternatively, try a different USB port or swap out the cables connected to your device.

Another solution to the issue is using Recoverit, a free tool which can recover files from an infected USB drive. This program is user friendly and will search and recover any deleted documents on your computer. Afterward, save these recovered items onto an external hard drive for safekeeping.
