Laptop screens can be damaged in a variety of ways, but fortunately they’re easy to replace.

In most cases, the process is straightforward and takes only a few hours to complete. This makes it an ideal DIY project for those looking to save money.

What You Need

Breaking a laptop screen may seem like an impossible fix, but with the right tools you can quickly and easily replace your broken LCD panel.

As a first step, identify the source of the issue. If you’re having trouble setting your screen’s color settings or your computer won’t boot up, this could indicate that your old display has died and needs replacement.

Once you know your computer model, you’ll need to find a replacement laptop screen that matches. You can either get one from the manufacturer’s store or buy it online; depending on which screen type, prices for replacement screens range from $50-$100.

Once you’ve obtained your replacement screen, it’s time to install it. First, remove the bezel around the LCD panel with a plastic putty knife; alternatively, you may pry open with fingernails or a small bowl.

After that, carefully separate the display from its case. This can be a tricky step so having someone assist you is recommended.

As you pry the bezel free, check that it isn’t cracked in any way. After that, unscrew the screws holding it to your laptop frame.

Once the screws have been undone, you can begin pulling away the old screen. Be mindful that some of your laptop’s hinges may be stuck to it; use your fingers to loosen them.

Once the old display is successfully taken off, uncover and unseat four frame screws holding it to your laptop lid. These can usually be found at either the corners of the bezel or near the bottom edge.

Once the screws have been taken out, place your LCD on top of your case and disconnect the video cable. Doing this will enable you to view all of the connectors and connections behind the display.

Once all connectors and cables have been removed, it’s time to install your new LCD screen. If unsure where it should go, consult your laptop manual for guidance.

Preparation

Laptop screens are essential components for keeping a laptop running optimally. If they become damaged, users cannot utilize their device efficiently and effectively; as such, if this has occurred, replacement should be undertaken as quickly as possible.

Before replacing your laptop screen, it is essential to gather all necessary tools and materials. This process can be time-consuming and difficult; thus, planning ahead is recommended.

First, find a secure space to work on your computer. A bright room with ample surface area will enable you to work more comfortably while using your laptop.

Next, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws located on top of your laptop frame. Doing so will allow you to take off plastic bezels that cover the display.

Once the plastic bezels have been taken off, you can begin separating the screen from its frame on both left and right sides by unscrewing side screws.

After that, gently lift off the video cable attached to your screen. This long wire must be unplugged from the back of your monitor.

In many cases, the LCD panel is attached to your laptop lid with double-sided adhesive tape and must be pulled away. Be mindful not to tear this tape as this could result in serious damage for your laptop.

Gently scrape away tape with a putty knife or spudger. Finally, carefully take apart the LCD from its laptop frame.

If possible, take the old display out before installing the new one. Doing so can save a considerable amount of time and energy.

It is also essential to remove any cover stickers from the bezel before installing a new screen. Doing this will protect it from damage during installation of the new display.

Once the installation of your new screen has been completed, you can test it out and if everything functions as expected, reinstall both the bezel and screws used in the previous step.

Removal

Replacing a laptop screen may seem like an intimidating task, but with the right knowledge and some time you won’t find it to be nearly as challenging as you think.

The initial step in fixing your laptop display problem is to confirm it’s actually the cause of the problem. Simply dropping a computer may not be sufficient enough to explain why your screen isn’t functioning properly.

An external monitor can help determine if the problem lies with the display or something else entirely. This will assist in deciding whether or not to replace the screen, which is typically the best course of action to get your computer running again.

Before you begin taking the screen off, ensure that your laptop is turned off and unplugged. Doing this will allow you to easily see any dust particles or debris on the display.

Once the display has been removed, clean it with a microfiber cloth and distilled or filtered water. Be sure not to use tap water as this can damage your screen.

Next, wipe the screen clean of any fingerprints with a dampened microfiber cloth and some gentle rubbing. Alternatively, you could try using an alcohol-based spray-on cleaner that contains mild detergents and alcohol for extra convenience.

If the screen still has fingerprints, use a dampened microfiber cloth and let it air-dry before turning your laptop on. If you can successfully wipe away any fingerprints, your laptop screen should now be in excellent condition and ready for installation.

Once you’re finished with the screen, place it back in its place and double-check to ensure alignment is still correct. Doing this helps avoid shifting or damaging the LCD display when reassembling it.

In some cases, you can simply take the panel from your laptop and store it separately for later use. This is an ideal option if you need to get your laptop repaired or replaced but don’t have enough money to buy a new one.

Another option is to take apart your entire display assembly from its hinges, which may be necessary if your screen is broken or otherwise unusable. Unfortunately, this method can be complex and if you don’t possess the required skills or tools for it yourself, visiting a computer repair shop might be best instead.

Installation

If your laptop screen is cracked and needs replacing, the installation process can be somewhat intricate. Depending on the brand and model of your computer, you may require special tools in order to complete the job correctly.

First, you must remove the old display. This can be the most challenging part of the whole process and may take some time to do correctly. You will need a thin spatula to carefully lift away from its plastic tabs that hold it in place, as well as either a screw driver or Allen wrench to loosen any screws holding the screen to its frame on your laptop.

Next, you will need to disconnect the video connector and inverter from the back of the display. These cables attach to the back and provide power for its back light. You should see a strip of tape at this location which needs peeling away before pulling away from you.

Once you locate the screw covers holding your laptop’s screen to its plastic frame, you will need a flat head or Phillips screwdriver to remove them.

After that, you must remove the eight screws attaching your screen to its plastic bezel. These typically reside along four corners of the bezel as well as four square screws holding in the inner lining.

Once the eight screws have been removed, you should be able to gently pull the screen away from its plastic bezel. If not, you may need to use a spudger or pair of tweezers to pry open the bezel and take out any remaining pieces.

Once the bezel is free, you can now install your new screen. Make sure all screws are tightened securely as this will ensure it remains in place.

After installation, test it to make sure everything works as expected. If any issues arise, contact a technician who can provide assistance.
