How To Choose the Right Gaming Device

How To Choose the Right Gaming Device 1

Gamers have never had as many choices as they do today. Think back 30 years and you had three main choices: a pricey gaming PC, a slightly cheaper games console, or a handheld console.

Whilst the latter allowed for gaming on the go, the Nintendo Game Boy, which was the market leader at the time, was very limited in terms of graphics and the types of games you could play.

Today, however, gamers have much more choice. You can enjoy a much broader mix of titles on many different types of hardware, catering to a much wider audience. But although more choice gives you more chance of finding games you’ll love, it can make picking one much more overwhelming.

Do you buy a high-end gaming PC, opt for a console, or play from your mobile device?

Gaming PC

There is a lot of fierce but (mostly) friendly debate among hardcore gamers as to whether a PC or console is better. The reality is there are many similarities between them if you want to play AAA titles but there are pros and cons of each.

For PC players, a computer offers a lot more flexibility. Not only do you have access to huge numbers of new releases, you have the biggest backwards compatibility of any device. Through emulation tools like DOSBox, you can play titles you enjoyed in the 80s and 90s, as well as many other remastered releases that have been made compatible with modern hardware.

On top of that, PC players can enjoy online card games like poker in real games against people from around the world. Internet card rooms offer more than just a platform for playing too, websites like PokerStars have become a valuable resource for those looking to learn about the game. This includes guides that cover basics like key rules and hand rankings, as well as more advanced topics like playing strategies for tournaments.

With all of these options, PC gamers have several million different games available to play from just one device.

Console

Consoles have, traditionally, had two key advantages over computers. The first is that they’ve been cheaper and the other is that they’ve been much easier to set up and use.

Today, they remain cheaper than a comparably priced gaming PC. Here in the UK, you can get your hands on a digital-only PlayStation 5 for a little over £300, whilst you’d need to pay more than twice that for a computer capable of playing most modern AAA games.

However, if you’re interested in playing other types of games, then there may be cheaper options.

A console is still relatively easy to use, but neither the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, or Nintendo Switch are simply ‘plug and play’. In the 1990s, you’d buy a PlayStation, connect it to your TV, open the lid, insert a disc, close it, turn it on, and you’d be able to play. Today, you need to connect it to the internet, create an account, install the game to the hard drive, run updates, and only then can you begin to play.

That said, that process is still easier than dealing with drivers, security software, and making tweaks to settings to get a game to run properly, like you may have to do on a computer.

Smartphone

Smartphones are a more recent entrant to the gaming market but their rapid rise in popularity eventually caused the demise of the handheld market.

Since the launch of the Apple App Store for the original iPhone in 2008, more than a million mobile games have been released for the device. A similar number of titles are also available from Google’s Play Store, meaning there’s very little difference between either ecosystem.

Mobile games have come a long way in recent years and, whilst they don’t rival the scale and graphics capabilities of the latest generation of consoles, they do offer big games like first-person shooters and racing games.

As long as you’re happy with this trade-off, then a smartphone is the ideal platform to play on. Since you already own a smartphone, you likely won’t need to shell out for a new piece of hardware, making it much cheaper. At the same time, the portability means you can enjoy the titles you download from practically anywhere.
