Stop, before you do anything else

What you do in the first minutes after data loss decides whether recovery is easy, hard, or impossible. Three rules protect your files:

  • Stop using the drive immediately. Every write to a failing drive can overwrite the files you want back. Power the device down.
  • Do not run recovery software on the source drive. Consumer tools that install to or scan the damaged drive can destroy recoverable data. Recovery must read from the drive, never write to it.
  • Never open a hard drive. Platters exposed to open air collect dust that makes mechanical recovery drastically harder. If a drive clicks, buzzes or isn’t detected, leave it sealed and bring it in.

Logical failure vs physical failure, and why the difference matters

Drive failure is routine, not rare: Backblaze’s Q1 2026 Drive Stats, tracking 341,263 production hard drives, records a lifetime annualised failure rate of 1.39%. Roughly 1 in 70 drives fails; the question is whether your data is recoverable when yours does.

Logical failure

The hardware works, but the data structure is broken: accidentally deleted files, formatted drives, corrupted partitions, damaged file systems. The drive spins and is detected, but files are missing or unreadable. Recovery images the drive and reconstructs the file system from the copy: the original is never modified.

Physical failure

The hardware itself is damaged: clicking read/write heads, seized motors, failed circuit boards, dead SSD controllers, drives dropped or water-damaged. The drive may not be detected at all. Recovery means repairing or bypassing the failed component at the bench before any data can be read.

What stays in-house, and what needs a specialist laboratory

  • Honest limits: data that has been overwritten by new files is generally unrecoverable by any provider, and encrypted drives can only be recovered with the encryption key or password.

Every recovery follows The Clinical Diagnostic Method: examine the symptoms, isolate the failing component, treat the cause rather than the symptom, and verify the result under load.

Which devices can data be recovered from?

Does it matter how the data was lost?

Yes, it decides everything. Deleted or formatted data is a logical case handled in-house. A dropped drive, clicking sounds, or a device that will not power on points to physical failure, which may need the specialist laboratory. Tell the workshop what happened and stop using the device. Can data be recovered from a clicking hard drive?

Often, yes. Clicking usually means the read/write heads have failed: a physical failure that needs bench repair before the platters can be read. Do not keep powering the drive on: every attempt risks scoring the platters. Power it down and bring it in sealed.

Is deleted data ever really gone?

Deleting a file removes its index entry, not the data itself, so recently deleted files are usually recoverable, if the drive stops being used immediately. Data becomes unrecoverable once new files overwrite the same space, which is why the first rule of data loss is to stop using the drive.
