Data recovery, performance and repair services in Birmingham

Dr IT Services leads with two things: recovering data from failed drives, and making slow computers fast again. Around them sits full workshop repair for the machines Birmingham actually uses: Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS and Acer; custom and gaming desktop PCs; and Apple MacBook, iMac and Mac Mini models. Each service below names what gets done, what it costs, and how long it takes.

Data recovery

Failed hard drives, corrupted SSDs, RAID arrays and phones: recovery assessed for mechanically failed, unrecognised and corrupted drives. If a drive fails, stop using it and bring it in. Recovery from £60; nothing is charged if the data is unrecoverable on basic checks.

Data Recovery

Failed RAID Array – Solihull Accountancy Practice

A Solihull accountancy firm arrived with a two-drive RAID 1 array that had degraded after a power surge, leaving ten years of client records inaccessible. Vlad used forensic imaging to clone both drives sector-by-sector before reconstruction. The array showed a partial write failure on drive one. All 47,000 files recovered. Total turnaround: 52 hours.

MacBook Repair

Overheating MacBook Pro M2 – Edgbaston Customer

A Birmingham video editor brought in a MacBook Pro M2 throttling under load, sustaining CPU temperatures above 103°C. Thermal paste had dried and the heatsink had micro-debris blocking two fins. After cleaning, applying Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, and reseating the heatsink, peak temperatures dropped to 71°C under the same workload. Render times improved by 34%.

Why Birmingham trusts Dr IT Services

One expert, every repair

Vlad Tabaranu founded Dr IT Services in April 2000 and has repaired computers full-time for over 25 years. He diagnoses and repairs every device himself: the person who quotes your repair is the person who does it. His Medical Bioengineering degree (‘Gr. T. Popa’ University, Iași, 2005–2009) shaped a diagnostic method that finds root causes, not symptoms.

Data recovery and computer repair questions, answered

Can you recover data from a dead hard drive?

In most cases, yes. Dr IT Services recovers data from mechanically failed hard drives, corrupted SSDs, RAID arrays, USB sticks and memory cards. Recovery starts at £60, and the No Fix, No Fee policy means basic checks cost nothing if the data cannot be recovered. Stop using the drive as soon as it fails: do not format it, reinstall the operating system, or keep powering it on, as this can reduce what is recoverable.

How much does computer repair cost in Birmingham?

Diagnosis at Dr IT Services costs £20 and completes within one working day. Laptop repairs run £40–£200, desktop PC repairs £50–£150, and Mac repairs £50–£725 depending on the model and part. Every price is listed on the repair price guide before you commit to anything.

How long does a repair take?

Diagnosis completes within 1 working day, or 2–4 hours with the £50 SOS Express service. Most repairs finish the same day once parts are in hand; repairs needing ordered parts typically take 2–5 working days.

Do you repair Apple MacBooks and iMacs?

Yes. Dr IT Services repairs MacBook Air, MacBook Pro (including M1 and M2), iMac and Mac Mini, screen assemblies, batteries, keyboards, and logic-board micro-soldering at component level, which is usually far cheaper than Apple’s board-replacement pricing.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Drop your device at the Harborne workshop (415 Court Oak Road, B32 2DX) any time during opening hours, Tuesday to Friday 8am–8pm, Saturday 10am–5pm.

Is my data safe during a repair?

Yes. Dr IT Services operates a zero file browsing policy: your files and settings are preserved during hardware repairs and never opened, copied or read beyond what the repair itself requires.
